Selecting a Realtor®
Ask the right questions
Selecting a Realtor is a very important decision that should not be taken lightly. Here you will find information on how to choose a Realtor including questions to ask.
There is a difference between a Realtor and a real estate agent. A Realtor is a real estate sales person or broker who is a member of their local board or association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. Besides the membership in required associations, Realtors must adhere to a strict code of ethics set forth by the National Association and local board. Additionally, Realtors also must participate in continued education.
Questions you should ask before selecting a Realtor or real estate agent:
- Does the Real Estate Agent/Realtor have an active license in good standing?
- Does the Real Estate Agent/Realtor belong to the Multiple Listing Service? The MLS is a private electronic data base of real estate that allows agents to share information about properties that are on the market.
- Does the Real Estate Agent/Realtor hold any special designations?
- How long have they been practicing real estate?
- Is real estate their full-time career?
- What areas does the Real Estate Agent/Realtor serve?
In addition to the above questions it is most important that you feel comfortable with the Realtor/Real Estate Agent that you select. Here are some questions you should ask yourself before selecting a Realtor:
- Does the Realtor/Real Estate Agent fit your style of buying/selling?
- Are they too pushy, too laid-back or just right?
- What are their negotiating skills?
- Do they provide you with the level of service you require?
- How is your rapport with them?
- Do they listen to you?
- Do they provide you with timely feedback?
- Are they knowledgeable on the subject of real estate?
- Are they familiar with the local area and market?
By answering these questions you should find the answers you need to choose the right Realtor for you. Ask your friends, family and business associates what qualities they look for in a Realtor and if they can suggest someone that you can trust.
